1. Create Raised Garden Beds for Easy Access
Raised garden beds are a revelation for courtyard gardening, eliminating the need for bending and kneeling whilst maximising your growing space.
Why they work:
- Reduce strain on backs and knees
- Provide better soil drainage and control
- Warm up faster in spring for earlier planting
- Keep pests at a manageable distance
Getting started:
Choose beds at waist height (around 60-90cm) for comfortable access. Cedar or treated pine are excellent timber choices or consider durable galvanised steel for a contemporary look. Fill with quality potting mix enriched with compost, and you’re ready to grow everything from tomatoes to native herbs.
For a courtyard, two or three raised beds measuring 1.2m x 0.6m provide ample growing space without overwhelming your area.
